Running DSET on VMware ESX

Summary of steps to perform action:
•Create user with SSH access
•Copy over file to server using WinSCP
•Connect to server using Putty/SSH client
•Run su -
•Run DSET using Putty
•Copy completed DSET report back to your computer
Things you will need:
1.root login to the ESX server.
2.Putty (which you will download later in the instructions)
3.WinSCP (which you will download later in the instructions)
4.DSET.bin file (which you will download later in the instructions)
5.Vsphere client (which can be downloaded by typing in the IP of the ESX server if you don’t have it already.
The first thing you have to do is enable SSH from the ESX server console. This has to be done by being physically at the server unless you have previously already enabled it. Once it’s enabled, you can use Putty to run commands remotely. *For Linux systems it should already be enabled by default, but VMware it has to be enabled manually.
I.Create user with SSH access
a.Login to the VMware Client (VIC) with Root credentials

b.Go to Users and Groups

c.Right click anywhere in the white area and select Add.
d.Fill out the details here, and be sure to check the Grant shell access to this user checkbox.
i.*You don’t need to put it in a group

II. Using WINSCP to transfer DSET to the server
a.Download and install WinSCP on any windows system on the network.
b.With SSH access to a system, you can use WinSCP or any other SCP client to transfer files to/from a system. WinSCP is a free application available at http://winscp.net/eng/download.php#download2. No special software is needed on the server side, just the root login.
c.Once you have logged into WinSCP using the credentials you created earlier in the VIC you’ll be presented with a File Management screen for both the local system, and the remote system
d.Now just drag and drop the file into a folder, such as /tmp, or in the default directory the comes up on the server. Doesn’t really matter where you put it.
III.Using Putty to run DSET
a.Download and run Putty: http://the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/latest/x86/putty.exe
b.Put in the IP of the server in the Putty window and click Open.
c.Once logged in, type su – (case sensitive). It will as for Password, enter root’s password.
d.Navigate to where the file was saved (for example, if it’s saved in /home/johndoe, type cd /home/johndoe.
e.Type chmod 755 is the file name then press enter. *You can just type in the first few letters of the filename then hit Tab and it should fill out the rest of the filename for you.
f.Type ./ then the filename as shown below. Again, just type the first few letters of the filename and hit tab to complete the filename for you automatically.
g.When the DSET .bin file is executed, you will be presented with the software license agreement. Press ‘q’ to proceed.
h.You will then be presented with a list of options for executing DSET. Choose option 2 to create DSET report Only. You don’t need to enter your company name and email.
i.You will then be presented with a series of running options. The only option we will want to choose “y” to is “Collect various advanced logs”.
j.Select “n” to save to a different location.
k.You will see “Report creation completed successfully” when it’s done.
i.*Can take about 5-10 minutes to complete.
IV.Copy file from server to your desktop
a.Once it’s done, use WinSCP to copy the report back onto your system and email it to your technician.
